The Rail Trail Project
The Rail Trail Project is a collaboration of the coastal and inland groups of Upper Waitematā.
The project is aimed towards protecting the Moho Pereru (Banded Rail) in the area. These birds are rarely seen around New Zealand due to their well-camouflaged feathers and their habitat being under the mangrove and wetland vegetation. Their population significantly decreased from New Zealand by the 1970s but they can still be found in parts of the country.
With extensive monitoring, their footprints have been seen in the Upper Waitematā recently so we are dedicated to making the coastline a predator free environment.
The maps below show the full extent of possible habitat of the Mohu Pereru and the current location of pest animal trapping sites currently in place.
